Q & A with author Andrew Butcher:

How did you come up with the premise for A Death Displaced?
The idea came to me about three or four years ago. My mind started thinking about fate and destiny. I pondered what would happen if somebody was fated to die, but they were somehow saved, going against fate. Would anything happen? Physically? Spiritually? Or even on a larger scale... would this displaced person offset some kind of balance in physics?

How many books do you intend to write in the Lansin Island Series?
At the moment, I'm planning on eight books. I have an overall arc for the story and a deeper mythology that I'm going to steadily unravel. Some readers may feel like I left A Death Displaced without an ending, but I resolved the main elements of the plot while also touching upon mysteries that won't be revealed until later in the series; some might not be answered until the last book.

What inspired you to write about the paranormal? Do you believe in things such as ghosts?
I find the paranormal interesting. When I was young, I would lay awake hoping for a ghost to appear to me or I'd close my eyes and try 'astral projection' or other psychic or paranormal things. I don't believe in spirits or anything paranormal now though, simply because I trust my experiences in life and I've never had anything obviously paranormal happen to me. But I do have a spiritual outlook on life.

A Death Displaced follows two main characters: a male and a female. What was it like writing from a female character's point of view?

I didn't worry about the gender. When I write about a female character, all I think about is her motivations and the situation she is in. There are obviously some big differences between men and women that I have to remember, but we are all human, and I just try to put myself in the character's position. Generally, I think the most useful skill as a writer is to have empathy.

Where do you write?
I write at home in my bedroom with a constant supply of tea. But while I'm out and about I usually have ideas come to me that I jot down if I can.

Why did you start writing?
I've struggled figuring out what I 'should' be doing with my life. Over the past few years I've tried to get into a lot of different subjects, but none of them clicked with me the way that writing has. It's the only hobby that I truly enjoy enough to want to stick at. And I don't mean that in a mopey, depressing way... it's a good thing!
