July 4th, 2005, Maggie's wedding day was the happiest day of her life, the most painful day of her life and the day she died three times.
Maggie lives as a recluse in the home that she and her dead husband, Jimmy, built together. It's all she has left of him. She has her friends, but has turned her back on the world and any possibility of spending her life with another man.
Five years after Jimmy's tragic death, Maggie's world is once again turned upside down when the last hold she has to her husband, their home, is destroyed. Maggie is thrown into the path of a man, the only man, that can bring her back to life. Elk Bend Chief of Police Michael Rogers is here to help her pick up the pieces and move on.
Rafferty, a close friend, has loved Maggie for years. He has been waiting for her to get over the loss of her husband and knows that in time she will be with him.
Rafferty has inserted himself into Maggie's life so deeply that she doesn't see his obsessive behavior. She doesn't realize that she has been stalked by Rafferty even before the death of her husband, or the danger that Rafferty represents to her. Maggie is his and he will do whatever he has to in order to keep her.
Will Maggie be able to start a new life with Michael? Or will she be so consumed with the fear of losing him that she is paralyzed to move forward with her new life?
Will Rafferty have the power over Maggie to extinguish any feelings she has for Michael? Or will he destroy her trying to wrestle her away from her fate with another man?
I will miss Maggie Mae (the book and the character). She’s one of the most intriguing characters I have read about in a long time. But it won’t only be her that I miss, but almost all of the characters from this novel. Sandy Wolters has created believable yet diverse and interesting characters that all interact with each other in realistic and emotional ways.
Early on in this book, I found myself laughing aloud, and also on a few occasions I was saying, ‘Nooo!’ because Sandy Wolters has a way of setting up a scene so that the reader feels apprehensive about what is coming.
If you are looking for a book that is heavy on the paranormal side, then this book isn’t it, but having said that, I don’t think that you will be disappointed. It’s definitely more a romance novel… but without the clever and heart-warming paranormal elements throughout, it wouldn’t be half the story that it is.
I don’t like to give spoilers in a review, so I try to avoid mentioning storylines or specific character interactions. I will say though, that some topics this book covers are love, loss, jealousy, obsession, friendship, family, and forgiveness. It may have you in tears, laughing aloud, or questioning what ‘true love’ is.
The storyline itself is very well structured and paced. I didn’t find any scenes that I was trudging through for the sake of getting further into the book. Sandy Wolters uses a good variety of vocabulary, and uses appropriate words that spark emotion in the reader (or it did for me, at least).
The only ‘problems’ I found were to do with formatting on the Kindle: the occasional indent that is further in than the rest, some apostrophes that were in a different type font. In other words, nothing major at all. These small issues were not jarring enough to bring down this review to 4 stars. And they can obviously be updated by the author for future downloaders, so I would not let this deter you.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone! I’d never read a book so heavy on the romance side before, but I’m glad I gave this one a chance. Like I said before, it covers topics that we can all relate to: love, jealousy, loss, etc… and some people can probably relate to the paranormal elements too.
If you want to read a book with diverse characters and an awesome female lead character, then read this. It’s obvious as you read, that Sandy Wolters poured her heart into ‘Maggie Mae’, and that makes it a pure pleasure to read.
